DURABILITY TESTING

The expected life of smart cards depends on their application: While banking cards will be in the field for around 3 years, smart IDs may be requested to last up to 10 years, hence the need for durability testing.

WHAT IS DURABILITY TESTING ?

Physical and durability testing help achieve these targets by reproducing stress or wear and tear on smart cards.

Durability testing consists in:

  • Physical durability (module, inlay, cover...)
  • Electrical durability (information stored in the chip)
  • Personalization durability (graphical information)
  • Security durability (graphical security, electronic certificates...)

Durability testing applies to smart cards, tokens as well as e-passports. Indeed governments wish to maintain their image, contain the costs of their e-passport migration and satisfy citizens. Such long life identity documents bear a lot of stress in the long term, hence the need to assess e-passports through durability testing.
